Yes But Orochimaru was more experienced and i wouldn't say one of the weakest with all the jutsus he mastered.
Sasori was younger, less experience and killed a more powerful kazekage
besides Orochimaru did a sneak attack

I Reckon He Did A Direct Approach Because The Damage Couldnt Have Been That Bad To Turn Him Into A Human Puppet.
Besides If He Were To Stab Him, The 3rd kazekage Could use Magnet Jutsus So He Would Repel The Blade Or Shuriken Or Whatever Weapon Would Have Been Used
